Backlogs and congestion at Southern California ports have not slowed the flow of counterfeit goods into the United States, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently issued a statement that its officers intercepted 13,586 high-quality counterfeit goods from CN in the run-up to the holiday season.
Federal Customs and Border Protection, working with import cargo specialists at the Consumer Products and Mass Merchandising Center, seized a container full of counterfeit designer items at the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach.
CBP officers found a large number of tote bags, satchels, fanny packs, backpacks, T-shirts and pants inside the container. All are famous brand high imitation goods, such as Guxci, Chaxel, Fxndi, YXL, Lx.
The counterfeit shipment, which CBP and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations intercepted, would have cost a total of $30,437,775 if it was genuine.
"CBP is committed to keeping counterfeit and smuggled goods out of U.S. supply chains, markets and high streets," said Carlos C. Martel, CBP's director of operations for the Los Angeles region.
Generally, such brand-name fakes are traded on illegal websites and underground black markets.
The rise of online commerce now gives criminals the opportunity to sell fakes behind seemingly legitimate websites. The trade in such fakes allows criminals to accumulate wealth and do more illegal activities.
Donald R Kusser, director of the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach, said, "Claws are using online shopping to sell counterfeit goods, especially during the holidays, when people are looking for discounts." He said, "If the price of the product is unrealistically low, it may mean that the goods are Fakes. Fakes are generally of poor quality and unsafe for you and your family."
In fiscal 2020, CBP intercepted 26,503 containers full of counterfeit goods. If it is genuine, the total value is nearly 1.3 billion yuan.
